ION Gallery
This exhibition brings together an eclectic group of artists whose practices consistently engage the field of visual associations, opening a distinctive poetic vein. The notions of time, space and memories are explored in a way where fictions and reality meet, meanings shift, and past and present fuse. By applying a poetic and often metaphorical language, the artists seduce the viewer into a world of fabricated illusions that articulate the stream of human drama in order to reflect on our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life.
Artists such as April Ng Kiow Ngor, Chiew Sien Kuan, Chua Chon Hee, Hoe Say Yong, Lynn Lim, Ng Siok Hoon, Oh Chai Hoo, Terence Tan and Raymond Yap explore the concept of landscape and nature in an evocative manner; amplifying the astonishment of the encounter by creating compositions or settings that generate tranquil lyrical imaginaries sitting on the edge between nostalgia and alienation. The curiosity in the individual’s psychological and emotional states are manifested in the works by Boo Sze Yang, Lim Soo Ngee, Ling Yang Chang, Soh Chee Hui and Yeo Siak Goon, where subjective memories of the artists are harvested to construct images of disconcerting beauty.

Painting . Artist
Soh Chee Hui 15 - 29 December 2012 In 2003, Soh Chee Hui was awarded the Freeman Foundation Fellowship for a two-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center in USA. During his stay, he met and made friends with many painters and artists from around the world at the centre. This inspired him to paint portrait of the artists as a way to document their brief meetings. The series of portraitures, titled "Life in Vermont", was exhibited at the Red Mill Gallery on conclusion of his residency at the centre. In 2011, Chee Hui started to work on a new series of portraitures of Malaysian artists. In “Painting. Artist”, Chee Hui incorporated image of the artist’s signature artwork into the painting. Using ink as a main medium, the images are meticulously constructed by multiple layers of ink on rice paper, incorporating translucent acrylic paint in some areas. For Chee Hui, these works are an expression of his admiration for the artists’ perseverance in the pursuit of their art and also served as a reminder to him to stay true to his own artistic quest.
